OpenAI API Credits Guide
Understand prepaid funding, reload controls, and the separation between ChatGPT and API billing.
Where to start
Begin in the API organization that owns your application. Keep the billing owner and technical owner explicit, and measure a representative workflow before choosing a prepaid purchase. A short prompt demonstration is not a reliable forecast for a multi-turn product.
The official prepaid guide covers purchased credits, automatic reloads, and delayed balance updates. ChatGPT uses a separate billing system; see the additional source reference below.
Before you commit a budget
- Confirm the API organization and project used by the application.
- Review the current purchase, expiration, and reload conditions.
- Track input, output, retries, and accepted results rather than requests alone.
Run a measured pilot
Choose a fixed set of realistic tasks and define what makes an answer usable. Record usage, elapsed time, unsuccessful attempts, and any extra work needed to finish. Keep a separate estimate of the ordinary operating cost when a free allowance or promotion is involved.
Review the chosen account’s current terms and limits before increasing traffic. Test your application’s stop and recovery behavior with a bounded workload, and name the person who can inspect billing and pause execution.
