Compare completed work, not headline balances
Define an accepted result before comparing providers. Keep invalid responses, retries, human corrections, and fallback calls in the evaluation. Use the same dataset and cost boundary for each route. A token-only figure cannot fairly be compared with another route’s full infrastructure and review cost.
The core calculation is straightforward: divide the measured cost by the number of accepted tasks. Add latency, failure consequences, and review effort alongside that metric rather than forcing every consideration into an unexplained ranking.
A worked comparison
Imagine Route A costs $4 for 1,000 attempts and produces 800 acceptable results. Its measured model cost is $0.005 per accepted result. Route B costs $5 and produces 950 acceptable results, or roughly $0.00526 each. Those invented figures do not select a universal winner. They tell you how much the direct cost differs before comparing review effort and user experience.

Fix duplicate work before shopping
Inspect retries, queue handling, repeated submissions, and abandoned jobs. Bound agent steps and optional tool calls. A small unit-price advantage can disappear inside a workflow that repeatedly performs the same operation.

Test changes one at a time
Evaluate shorter prompts, selective context, constrained output, task routing, and asynchronous processing when appropriate. Preserve the same acceptance criteria after each change. A shorter answer that creates more follow-up work may not reduce the complete task cost.
Keep a dated record of the model, configuration, dataset, and result. This makes a future review possible when the workload or service changes.
